Monday 14th October – Travel, relax and walk – sunny and warm

We did our exercises in the sun on the canal path, not a cloud in the sky:) We drove out through Carcassonne and called in at Lidl. We drove through the beautiful Corbieres and turned off at Moux – a really nice wine making town with the ‘caves’ under the houses. Found the road we had spotted on the map which turns into a track as it winds up through the hills towards the Roc de l’Aigle. It was getting pretty steep and the track really rutted with gulleys and loose stones so we stopped on a nice flat bit and went for a long walk. Had lunch and a rest back at the van then drove on to Port-la-Nouvelle where I was disappointed to find that they have put a height restriction on the beach we used to drive onto to windsurf so that has messed up my plans:( We had a long walk on the beach. We drove to McDonalds to see if the computer could lurch into life to check the weather on the internet and it behaved itself in safe mode to let us do what we wanted. We parked up at our favourite spot on the edge of the etang at Sigean Port Mahon.

Tuesday 15th October – bike ***** Gruissan bike route 1 – beach and etang - cloudy

Had a lovely leisurely start to the morning and although the sky was very white and gloomy it is very warm. We left about 11 and drove through the lovely Peyriac de Mer and on to the canal du midi at Mandirac to see if we could see any storks. Well there were loads of them together with lots and lots of both little and great white egrets and herons. There is a field of Rice here and they love it – the whole field is full of heads with long beaks popping up:) In the dykes running round and through the field there are literally hundreds of birds and fish! Also lots of crayfish. Had a nice walk along the canal and watched the birds. Drove on to Gruissan and to the end of the canal where you get a good view of the windsurfing beach. There is a camper aire there which was closed so there were several lost and confused looking camping car drivers! We had our lunch here then drove to our usual parking spot in the hills towards the little fishing village. We got the bikes off and biked what we later discovered was bike track number1 which runs out across the saltines (we saw them using heavy plant to move huge amounts of salt in piles nearer the road) and to the beach. We have always wanted to go across this path but it always seemed too far to walk so now with the bikes we were able to enjoy it:) We biked along the beach and through the dreaded chicane which is supposed to stop cars driving on the beach and where we scraped the side of the van when it was still very new! Carried on through the old town and round the marina before biking back along the rest of mountain bike cycle route number 1 (tres facile apparently!) which came across the etang on a really rough path before turning up into the hills and through the little fishing village and finally arriving back at the van. It was a brilliant afternoon and we got back just before it got dark!
